Build your sleep schedule
This planning calculator is intended for people aged 6 years and older. Recommendations for younger children require additional consideration of naps and individual needs.
Your sleep plan will appear here
Choose what you want to calculate, then enter your age, time and preferred sleep duration.
Your estimated sleep schedule
This is a planning estimate. Actual sleep onset, awakenings and sleep quality can change how much sleep you receive.
Simple step-by-step guide
How to Use the Sleep Time Calculator
Choose the schedule you want to plan, enter one known time and select a sleep duration. The calculator will arrange your complete overnight timeline automatically.
If you must wake at a particular time, calculate your bedtime. If your bedtime is already fixed, calculate your wake time. All times are interpreted in your own local time zone.
Enter Your Age
Enter an age from 6 to 120. The calculator uses it to show the corresponding daily sleep-duration reference and to provide suitable planning options.
Choose Your Known Time
Enter either the time you need to wake or the time you plan to get into bed. This becomes the fixed point from which the other times are calculated.
Allow Time to Fall Asleep
Select your planned sleep duration and a realistic estimate of how long you usually need to fall asleep. The second value is added to your total time in bed.
Create Your Schedule
Work through these four steps in order. You can change the selections and calculate again whenever your bedtime or morning schedule changes.
-
Choose bedtime or wake-time mode at the top of the form.
-
Enter your age and known clock time using the fields shown for the selected mode.
-
Select a sleep duration from the age-based options and add your usual fall-asleep time.
-
Select Calculate My Sleep Time and review the get-into-bed, estimated sleep-start and wake-up times.
About the fall-asleep allowance: Use a typical estimate, not the fastest time you have ever fallen asleep. If this varies widely, treat the resulting schedule as an approximate starting point.
Age-based sleep guidance
Recommended Sleep Duration by Age
Sleep needs change across the lifespan. These daily reference amounts guide the options shown in the calculator for people aged 6 and older.
They describe total sleep rather than simply the number of hours spent in bed. Younger children may obtain some sleep through naps.
Why the Adult Calculator Offers 7–9 Hours
Guidance for adults aged 18–60 states 7 or more hours. The calculator provides 7–9 hours as practical scheduling choices, but this is not a claim that 9 hours is a universal maximum. Some people may appropriately need more sleep.
Duration Is Only One Part of Sleep
Healthy sleep also involves quality, regularity and feeling refreshed. Enough time in bed does not guarantee uninterrupted or restorative sleep, particularly when a sleep problem is present.
Transparent calculation method
How the Sleep Time Calculation Works
The calculator uses straightforward time arithmetic. It combines your chosen sleep duration with any time you allow for falling asleep, then works forward from bedtime or backward from wake time.
When You Know Your Bedtime
The selected sleep duration begins after the sleep-onset allowance. Both amounts are added to your entered bedtime to estimate a wake time.
Wake time = bedtime + time to fall asleep + sleep durationWhen You Know Your Wake Time
The calculator subtracts both your selected sleep duration and your sleep-onset allowance from the wake time to estimate when to get in bed.
Bedtime = wake time − sleep duration − time to fall asleepWhat the Calculator Does
It starts with the bedtime or wake time you enter.
It uses the sleep duration and sleep-onset allowance you select.
It labels the result as today, tomorrow or the previous day when needed.
Bed at 10:30 PM
10:30 PM + 15 minutes + 8 hours = 6:45 AM
With an eight-hour sleep duration and 15 minutes to fall asleep, the estimated wake time is 6:45 AM the following day.
Wake at 7:00 AM
7:00 AM − 8 hours − 20 minutes = 10:40 PM
With an eight-hour sleep duration and 20 minutes to fall asleep, the estimated time to get into bed is 10:40 PM the previous evening.
This is a scheduling calculation, not a sleep-cycle prediction. It does not detect when you actually fall asleep, how often you wake, your sleep stages or the quality of your sleep. The result should be treated as a practical planning estimate.
Use your estimate thoughtfully
Sleep Planning Tips and Limitations
A calculated bedtime or wake time can help you plan, but a clock-based estimate cannot account for every factor that affects real sleep.
Tips for Using Your Schedule
-
Aim for a regular schedule
Where practical, keep your bedtime and wake time reasonably consistent, including across weekends.
-
Allow time to wind down
Treat the calculated bedtime as the time to be ready for sleep, and begin a calm pre-sleep routine beforehand.
-
Review your sleep environment
A quiet, cool and dark bedroom may support sleep more effectively than relying on the calculated time alone.
-
Notice how you feel during the day
Daytime sleepiness, concentration problems or regularly waking unrefreshed may mean the schedule is not meeting your needs.
What the Calculator Cannot Know
-
Your actual sleep-onset time
The calculation uses the allowance you select. The time it takes to fall asleep can vary from one night to another.
-
Awakenings and sleep quality
Time in bed is not the same as uninterrupted, restorative sleep. The calculator does not measure awakenings or sleep stages.
-
Individual and changing needs
Health, medication, pregnancy, recovery, stress, shift work and other circumstances may affect when and how long someone sleeps.
-
The cause of a sleep problem
A scheduling tool cannot identify insomnia, sleep apnoea or any other medical condition.
Adjust the Plan Using Your Experience
If you routinely need longer to fall asleep, update the sleep-onset allowance and calculate again. If the selected sleep duration leaves you persistently tired, avoid assuming that a different clock time is the only answer; sleep quality and health factors may also matter.
Common questions answered
Sleep Time Calculator FAQs
Learn what the calculator estimates, how its time choices work and where a simple sleep schedule has important limits.
Select a question to reveal the answer. These explanations provide general information rather than personalised medical advice.
What does the Sleep Time Calculator calculate?
It estimates a bedtime from a known wake time, or a wake time from a known bedtime. The calculation combines your selected sleep duration with the amount of time you allow for falling asleep.
How much sleep should I select?
Use the age-based choices shown by the calculator as general reference amounts. Sleep needs differ between people, and enough sleep also involves quality and timing rather than duration alone.
Why does the calculator ask how long I take to fall asleep?
Time in bed begins before sleep actually starts. Adding a sleep-onset allowance helps distinguish the planned time you get into bed from the time your selected sleep duration is expected to begin. Your real sleep-onset time may vary each night.
Why does my result say tomorrow or the previous day?
Most overnight schedules cross midnight. The day label clarifies whether the calculated result falls on the following morning or the evening before your entered time.
Does this calculator use 90-minute sleep cycles?
No. It uses your selected sleep duration and sleep-onset allowance. It does not predict individual sleep stages or assume that every person completes sleep cycles of an identical fixed length.
Can children and teenagers use the calculator?
The calculator provides age-based duration choices for people aged 6 and older. For children and teenagers, a parent or caregiver should consider school demands, naps, health needs and advice from an appropriate healthcare professional.
Can I use it for shift work or an irregular schedule?
You can use the time arithmetic for a daytime or changing sleep period, but the result does not account for circadian timing, rotating shifts, split sleep or the effects of working overnight.
Why might I still feel tired after allowing enough time for sleep?
A calculated duration does not confirm uninterrupted or restorative sleep. If you regularly have trouble sleeping, wake unrefreshed or experience daytime sleepiness, consider discussing this with a qualified health professional.
Can this calculator diagnose insomnia or sleep apnoea?
No. It is a planning tool and cannot diagnose any sleep disorder. A healthcare professional may review your symptoms, sleep history or testing when a sleep disorder is suspected. Please also read our Medical Disclaimer.
