    Simple four-step process

How to use the Word Unscrambler

Start with the letters available to you, then use the optional controls only when you need to narrow a large list of matches.

    Enter your letters

Type between 2 and 12 scrambled letters in any order. Spaces are ignored, so you may enter the letters together or separately.

    Add blank tiles

Use a question mark for each unknown or blank tile. You can include up to two question marks in a single search.

    Choose your filters

Set a minimum length, require a starting or ending sequence, or select the option to use every available tile.

    Review and copy matches

Sort the results, copy individual words or copy the complete displayed list for easy reference.

    Worked example

    Unscrambling LISTEN

Entering the letters in “LISTEN” can produce several words of different lengths. Select “Use every entered letter” when you only want six-letter anagrams.

Useful tip: Leave the “Use every entered letter” option unchecked when shorter words are also helpful.

    Available letters

    L I S T E N

    Example matches

    • Silent
    • Listen
    • Enlist
    • Inlet
    • Line
    • Ten

    Practical ways to use it

When a Word Unscrambler can help

Use the tool whenever you have a fixed group of letters but cannot immediately see the words they could create.

    Tile-based word games

Explore possible words from the letters on your rack, including shorter options when using every tile is not required.

    Anagrams and jumbled words

Rearrange a complete set of letters to investigate possible anagrams or solve a scrambled-word challenge.

    Crosswords and word puzzles

Combine available letters with a required starting or ending sequence to narrow down likely puzzle answers.

    Vocabulary practice

Discover familiar and less obvious words that can be built from the same letters while practising spelling and word recognition.

    Refine a large result list

Use only the filters you know

Optional filters are most helpful when your letter set produces many matches. Adding an incorrect condition can hide the word you are trying to find.

    • Increase the minimum length to remove shorter matches.
    • Add a starting or ending sequence only when its position is known.
    • Select use every letter when searching specifically for a full-length anagram.
    • Use longest first when higher-length possibilities are your priority.

    Transparent methodology

How the Word Unscrambler finds matches

The tool searches a broad English vocabulary and then applies several checks to make sure each displayed word can be created from the letters and options you entered.

    Step 1

    Prepare the letter set

Spaces are removed, letters are treated without regard to uppercase or lowercase and each question mark is counted as one blank tile.

    Step 2

    Search by possible length

The vocabulary is searched for words between your selected minimum length and the total number of available tiles.

    Step 3

    Validate every candidate

Each word is checked letter by letter. A letter cannot be used more times than it appears unless a blank tile covers the shortage.

    Step 4

    Filter, sort and display

Starting letters, ending letters and full-letter usage are applied before the remaining matches are sorted and shown.

    Letter-matching rules

    • Repeated letters are counted separately. Two occurrences can be used only when two matching tiles are available or a blank covers the additional letter.
    • One question mark can replace one letter; two question marks can replace up to two letters.
    • When “Use every entered letter” is selected, results must have the same length as the complete tile set.
    • Results containing spaces, punctuation or multiple words are removed before display.

    Troubleshooting guide

    Common Word Unscrambler mistakes

If the results look incomplete or no matches appear, check these common input and filter issues before trying again.

    Missing repeated letters

Enter every tile separately. A word containing two of the same letter requires two matching tiles unless a blank is available.

    Using the wrong blank symbol

Use a question mark for each blank tile. An asterisk, underscore or dash is not accepted in this tool.

    Requiring every letter accidentally

Uncheck “Use every entered letter” when you also want to see words shorter than the complete tile set.

    Incorrect starting or ending letters

These filters specify an exact position. Remove them if you are unsure where the known letters belong.

    Minimum length is too high

A high minimum can hide shorter valid words. Lower it when you want a broader collection of possible matches.

    Your game uses another dictionary

A valid English word may still be accepted or rejected differently by a particular game’s official word list.

    No matches appeared?

    Try this sequence

Broaden one condition at a time. This makes it easier to identify which setting is removing the expected word.

    1. Confirm that every available letter has been entered correctly.
    2. Replace each genuine blank tile with a question mark.
    3. Remove the starting-letter and ending-letter filters.
    4. Uncheck the option requiring every entered tile.
    5. Lower the minimum word length and run the search again.

If the tool still behaves unexpectedly, report the problem here.

    Common questions

    Word Unscrambler FAQs

Learn how blank tiles, repeated letters, filters and full-length word searches work.

What does a Word Unscrambler do?

A Word Unscrambler searches for words that can be created from a collection of letters entered in any order. It can return full-length anagrams as well as shorter words made from part of the letter set.

Do I need to enter the letters in a particular order?

No. Enter the letters in any order. The tool counts the available letters and checks which words can be created from them.

How do I represent a blank tile?

Enter a question mark for each blank tile. For example, TONES? contains five known letters and one blank that can replace another letter. You can enter up to two question marks.

Can the same letter be used more than once?

Only when it appears more than once in your entered letters or a blank tile supplies the additional copy. Each occurrence is counted separately.

How can I find words using every letter?

Select “Use every entered letter or blank tile.” Results will then have the same length as your complete letter set and must use all available tiles.

Why did the tool return no matching words?

A filter may be too restrictive, the minimum length may be too high or the available letters may not create a word in the searched vocabulary. Remove optional filters and try a broader search.

Are all results accepted in every word game?

No. Games can use different dictionaries and rules for regional spellings, uncommon terms, abbreviations and inflected words. Check uncertain results against the official word list for your game.

What is the difference between an unscrambler and an anagram generator?

An unscrambler can find shorter words made from some of the available letters. An anagram generator generally focuses on rearrangements that use the complete set of entered letters.

Does the Word Unscrambler work offline?

No. An internet connection is required because the tool requests matching vocabulary when you run a search.
