Formula and methodology
How Is the Healthy Weight Range Calculated?
The calculator rearranges the standard adult BMI equation to find the weights corresponding to the lower and upper boundaries of the adult healthy-weight BMI category.
The Calculation Formula
BMI is normally calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. To calculate a weight from a selected BMI boundary, the equation is rearranged.
Calculates the weight corresponding to an adult BMI of 18.5.
Calculates the weight corresponding to an adult BMI of 24.9.
Lower BMI Boundary
The lower result is the weight that produces a BMI of 18.5 at the height entered.
Upper BMI Boundary
The upper result is the weight that produces a BMI of 24.9 at the same height.
Rounded Results
Displayed weights are rounded for readability, so very small differences may occur if the calculation is repeated manually.

Reading your estimate
Understanding Your Healthy Weight Range Result
Your result contains a lower and upper weight calculated from your height. These numbers describe a standard adult BMI reference interval—not a precise personal target.
Why the Calculator Shows a Range
Many different weights can correspond to an adult BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 at the same height. For that reason, the calculator returns an interval rather than selecting one number as your ideal weight.
Every point along this line represents a different weight within the standard adult BMI reference category for the height entered.
The Lower Number
This is the estimated weight at which your BMI would equal 18.5. It is a category boundary, not a recommendation to aim for the lowest value.
The Space Between
The numbers between the boundaries fall within the standard adult BMI reference interval. No single point within that interval is automatically best for every person.
The Upper Number
This is the estimated weight at which your BMI would equal 24.9. It is also a category boundary rather than a personalised maximum or treatment threshold.
What the Range Does Not Measure
BMI is calculated from height and weight. It does not directly measure body fat or provide a complete assessment of health, body composition or individual risk.
-
Muscle and fat mass The formula cannot distinguish muscle, body fat, bone or other components of body weight.
-
Fat distribution It does not show where body fat is carried, including whether more is carried around the waist.
-
Individual differences The relationship between BMI, body composition and health can vary with factors such as age, sex and ethnicity.
-
Personal circumstances Pregnancy, medical conditions, disability, medicines and individual health goals require additional context.

Appropriate use and safety
Who Should Use This Calculator?
This tool provides a general BMI-based weight reference for adults. Some people require a different assessment method or additional professional interpretation.
Designed for Adults Aged 20 Years and Older
The calculator applies the standard fixed adult BMI boundaries of 18.5 through 24.9. It can provide a quick general reference when those adult boundaries are appropriate, but it does not confirm that every weight within the interval is suitable for a particular person.
Children and Teenagers
Do not use fixed adult BMI boundaries for someone aged 2 through 19. BMI in children and teenagers is interpreted using age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles and growth charts. A doctor or other qualified health professional can help interpret growth appropriately.
Pregnancy and After Pregnancy
This height-only adult range is not a pregnancy weight-gain guide. Pregnancy recommendations consider factors such as pre-pregnancy measurements, stage of pregnancy and whether more than one baby is expected. Ask your doctor or midwife for individual guidance.
People With Substantial Muscle Mass
Because BMI does not distinguish muscle from body fat, the displayed range may be less informative for some athletes, strength-trained adults or other people with comparatively high muscle mass.
Older Adults or People With Frailty
Changes in muscle mass, mobility, appetite, medical history and nutritional needs may affect how a BMI-based range should be interpreted. A personalised assessment may be more useful than relying on the calculated interval alone.
Medical Conditions, Medicines or Disability
Fluid retention, reduced mobility, changes in muscle mass, medical treatment, medicines and some health conditions can affect weight or the meaning of a BMI-based result. Do not change prescribed treatment, nutrition support or medicines in response to this calculator.
A broader health picture
A Healthy Weight Is More Than a BMI Range
The calculated interval can provide a useful starting reference, but a more complete view considers body composition, fat distribution, health history, daily habits and clinical information.
Use Several Pieces of Information
BMI describes weight relative to height. It does not directly measure body fat, muscle, fitness, nutrition or overall health. Its meaning is stronger when considered alongside other relevant information rather than used as a stand-alone judgement.
-
Medical history Existing conditions, family history and current treatment may affect interpretation.
-
Physical findings Blood pressure, muscle mass, mobility and other findings can provide additional context.
-
Laboratory information Glucose, cholesterol and other clinician-selected tests may contribute to a broader assessment.
-
Daily habits Food patterns, movement, sleep, stress and medicines can influence weight and health.

Common questions
Healthy Weight Range Calculator FAQs
Find answers about the calculation, adult BMI boundaries, interpretation, measurement systems and situations requiring additional guidance.
What is a healthy weight range for my height?
For adults aged 20 years and older, this calculator estimates the weights corresponding to a BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 at the height entered. The resulting interval is a general adult BMI reference range, not a personalised ideal-weight recommendation.
How does the Healthy Weight Range Calculator work?
The calculator converts your height to metres and squares it. It multiplies the squared height by 18.5 to calculate the lower boundary and by 24.9 to calculate the upper boundary. It then converts the results between kilograms and pounds for display.
Why does the calculator only ask for my height?
The purpose of this calculator is to find the weights that correspond to selected BMI boundaries at a particular height. Your current weight is not needed for that calculation. To calculate your present BMI, use the BMI Calculator, which requires both height and weight.
Is the middle of the range my ideal weight?
No. The midpoint has no special status and is not automatically the ideal weight for an individual. A suitable weight can depend on body composition, health history, nutritional needs, life stage, medicines, mobility and other factors that the calculator cannot assess.
Why is the calculated weight interval so wide?
The interval covers every weight corresponding to a BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 at the height entered. Because this covers several BMI points rather than one selected value, the difference between the lower and upper weights can be substantial.
Can children or teenagers use this calculator?
No. Fixed adult BMI boundaries are not appropriate for people aged 2 through 19. Children and teenagers are assessed using BMI-for-age percentiles that account for age and sex. Parents and caregivers should discuss growth or weight concerns with an appropriate health professional.
Can I use this calculator during pregnancy?
This calculator is not a pregnancy weight-gain guide. Pregnancy recommendations require factors such as pre-pregnancy measurements, stage of pregnancy and whether more than one baby is expected. Ask your doctor or midwife for guidance appropriate to your pregnancy.
Does having more muscle affect the result?
The mathematical range does not change because the formula uses height and BMI boundaries only. However, BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat or bone. The result may therefore require additional interpretation for athletes, strength-trained adults and other people with substantial muscle mass.
What should I do if my current weight is outside the range?
A result outside the interval does not diagnose a health condition or prove that a particular change is necessary. Avoid making abrupt weight, eating, exercise or medicine changes based only on this calculator. If you are concerned, seek advice from a qualified health professional who can consider your circumstances.
Why might another healthy weight calculator give a different result?
Calculators may use different BMI boundaries, equations, rounding rules or unit-conversion methods. Some may use an upper boundary of 25 rather than 24.9, while others may apply different population-specific guidance. Check the published method before comparing results.
